Remembering My First Love

Ahh our first love ...

We all had one.

The one that made us giddy, gave us butterflies, passed notes to in study hall. The one we scribbled the name of all over our notebooks (you know you did!). The one we dreamed what our life would be like together, married and with kids. Maybe our first love even gave us that first kiss, as awkward as it was, it was memorable, none the less.

But my first love was even more special and memorable than that. And it wasn't a boy, either. Earlier than I can remember, I was in love with horses. Any and all horses. I dreamed, wished upon a star and prayed nightly for my dreams of owning a horse to come true. I lived and breathed horses as a little girl. I would be remiss to say that I do hope RayRay carries on my infatuation with horses.

In an unconventional sort of way, my dreams came true in 1994. I was in 4th grade.

After an unfortunate turn of events (my parents divorce), I found myself the new owner of a horse. A horse named Jack. My parents bought Jack, a registered Quarter Horse as a family horse from an auction in Michigan and then during the divorce my mom acquired Jack.

It was a bit awkward, I'll admit, but I was determined to love that horse and make him my own. I read every equine book known to mankind (ok, maybe not every) to learn about caring for and training a show horse.

By the way, Jack was not a show horse, prior to 94. He was, well just a regular kind of horse.

But not to me. To me, he was and will always be the most beautiful, spectacular horse in the world. He was my very own white stallion.

From the age of 14 on, I cared for Jack day and night, trained him and showed him in 4-H at the local and state level.

I loved him so, but good lord did he test me. To admit that he was ornery would I believe be an understatement. He was a stinker and we had our good days and bad days. But his personality seemed to override his sometimes cynical attitude. He was very loving and full of personality.

He would follow me anywhere and do just about anything I asked of him, except of course when I showed him. Then he would really put on a show. But then again, we did win quite a few blue ribbons, because when he was on, we were red hot.

Jack in 2009. Still beautiful.
He was my first love and I'll never forget him.

Today is Jack's birthday. He would be 30 today.

You see, we were the same age. We literally grew up together from the age of 7 on. We spent alot of time together and I'm not afraid to admit that I'd practice my dance moves (and vocals too) out in the barn while I cleaned his stall that only he would be witness to. He was even a part of my science fair project in 8th grade when I played different varieties of music to see if it affected his behavior and performance. I can't recall the results, as it was a pretty bogus project, but then again, it was fun.

Two years ago, I lost my first love when he came down with a cancerous infection in his intestines. I was just three months pregnant with RayRay at the time.

It was the saddest, most difficult day of my life to date. I remember telling our veterinarian that I would walk him outside in the cold snow all day if it would help him get better (I walked him in circles for eight straight hours that faithful day in January).

I remember sitting with him in the snow as he laid down to close his eyes for the final time, telling him how much I loved him and what he meaned to me. I remember telling him to stay so he could meet my little girl.

He was 27 when we had to put him down and I love him still to this day. In fact, he was so important to me that he was part of our wedding photos. And as you may've guessed by now, that photo hangs on our bedroom wall.

Jack was my first love and Big D knows it. Even Big D came to fall in love with Jack and turned out to the be the first horse he ever rode. Big D wouldn't like me sharing this, but he even shed a tear the day Jack died. I miss that wild white horse like crazy and look forward to seeing him again in horse heaven someday. Because, yes, there is a special place in heaven for horses like Jack.

Wordless Wednesday: The Dirty 30 Tailgate!

Big D turned the page last week and entered his Dirty 30s! And for that, I promised him not a birthday day celebration, but an entire week of partying! Yea I'm hoping I picked up plenty of brownie points (ahem, ahem ...) for all my hardcore birthday party planning work.

But as we approached the big day, I knew the big man would be in the field planting corn. And you don't drag a farmer out of the field when he's hard at work! At least not my farmer.

So my plan was to surprise him in the field with the arrival of all of his friends for a tailgate party. Unfortunately, though my plan fell through a bit when it rained for two days straight prior to the big day putting a major damper on the party plans. But, alas, I had my heart set on it, so I decided to throw the tailgate right in the front yard at the farm, anyways!

Yea I know it is a little hillbilly, but I guess that's how we roll!

It was supposed to be a BIG surprise and for the most part it still was, except when Big D came home nearly 1 1/2 hours before I told him to. I'm not sure how you explain what you're doing putting balloons around the patio, so yea, I think he figured it out. I told him to go back to work, come back at 7 and be surprised!

Beer (lots of it!), pizza, balloons and cake made up the party decor along with about 5 or 6 trucks and SUVs parked in line for the tailgate. With plenty of good friends and lots of laughs to boot, everyone had a nice, relaxing evening to celebrate Big D's Dirty 30!

Pizza and beer, what more can I say. Happy Birthday Big D!

3-0

Balloons were a BIG hit!

You might remember this little sweetie from our summer vacay to Michigan with friends!

Then of course, Miss RayRay.

It's safe to say that these two enjoyed the party most of all.

Everyday is Earth Day on Our Farm!

I am very proud to be a farmer!

But with that pride comes a considerable amount of responsibility to take care of the natural resources that take care of our family.

You see, farmers are America's most natural stewards of the land, we're really all conservationists at heart. Especially, when you think about passing the farm onto the next generation. It's vital to utilize sustainable practices that best conserve our natural resources such as crop rotation, no-till farming, filter strips or grassy areas that separate fields from waterways helping to filter pollutants and soil sediments from surface water runoff before it reaches streams. In other words, if we don't take care of the land (versus robbing it void of all nutrients) then how can the land to take care of us, let alone provide any future opportunities for our children to raise their families on the farm.

So Earth Day is not only important to us on April 22, but every single day of the year.

First day out planting corn on April 7!

A beautifully-planted piece of the Earth! Can't wait to see little corn plants sprouting through that fresh dirt!

Farmers are also the original recyclers. Here on our hog farm, we take the waste (yea the poo!) from our pigs, spread it onto our corn and soybean fields to use as a fertilizer, which in turn helps provide nutrients for our growing crops, which we harvest in the fall and then use the harvested corn to feed our pigs.

So if you're out and about on April 22 and looking for ways to celebrate Earth Day, slow down, be patient with farm equipment on the roads and thank a local farmer for helping to take such good care of our little part of the universe.

Also, if you're an Indianapolis local or looking for a roadtrip, come visit one of the Real Farmwives of America with the Indiana Family of Farmers at the White River State Park in Indianapolis for Earth Day Indiana on April 28.

Wordless Wednesday: Happy Birthday Big D!!

Yesterday was my hubby Big D's BIG 3-0! I told him it's his birthday week and this would be his best birthday yet!

Then after work and a few more presents, I took the birthday boy out to his favorite restaurant - P.F. Changs for dinner! But there are still a few more surprises in store for my special birthday man!

Happy Birthday to my best friend, a great daddy and the best hubby in the world!! We love you baby!!

Love these two!!!

Wordless Wednesday: Egg-cellent!

This was our Sweet Baby RayRay's second Easter and first time "hunting" eggs. We hit up a local community egg hunt - we even made a new little friend (and it wasn't the Easter bunny). In fact, we didn't even get to meet the Easter bunny - but then I think that's probably for the best (after a bad run in with Santa last year).

As for the Easter egg hunt, RayRay was basically a rock star in her age division - collecting yellow egg after yellow egg (her designated color). I was a proud trackside momma - next year I doubt we will even have to carry her basket. Miss Independent, that she is.

We were supposed to do an Easter egg hunt at the farm, too. But it didn't really work out (Grammy came down with influenza). We were supposed to cook out, too (but our grill sorta fell apart.) But hey, we were together, lived, loved and celebrated the Resurrection of Christ. What more can you really ask for!

Egg-cellent!

A new friend - hoping we'll see her again next year!

Opening all the eggs with Grammy!
By Sunday morning, the Easter Bunny made his stop at the farm, leaving Miss RayRay quite a nice little pink polka-dot basket full of goodies, games, books and of course, chocolate. We didn't have time to change out of our PJs, so we dived right in to see what filled the basket.

Disney princess stickers and candy. Oh my!

Cookies

Someone was pretty excited about the chocolate. I only wish I could've gotten this on tape - she was skipping and waving her arms in the air like some kind of happy rain dance. Hilarious.

Chocolate that melts in your hand, not your mouth. At least that's how she thought that line goes...

Easter Sunday. We only took about a dozen photos and still couldn't get our little shrimp to smile. Plus the shoes for her dress that morning didn't fit so we had to improvise a little. But, eh, that's what us moms do!
